A SINGER is to release his first solo CD later this month after a musical career which has spanned more than four decades.

Michael Kelly has been a favourite on Durham's folk circuit since the 1970s. He has recorded several times with various bands and as a guest for other musicians, but the release of Sand Through The Hour Glass will be his first solo release.

The CD features 12 original songs written by the Blackhill-born musician over the past 30 years, including reflections of his childhood in the 1950s and 1960s.

Perhaps best known for his contribution to the Tales Of Derwentdale album, released in 1990, Mr Kelly has performed at shows around the region during his long career in music.

He said: "I think most of my songs are influenced by The Beatles, Paul Simon, James Taylor and The Eagles. I have drawn on aspects of their work and I hope I reflect their styles in my songs.

"There is a theme which runs through the CD about the passage of time, the seasons and life itself."

Sand Through The Hour Glass will be launched at a gig at Consett Library on Thursday, March 24 at 7.30pm, where Mr Kelly will perform a selection of songs from the album and sign copies of the CD.

Admission is £1.50 or £1 for concessions, which includes a glass of wine.

The album will be available through local shops; at Mr Kelly's forthcoming gigs at All Saints School, in Kitswell Road, Lanchester on Saturday, April 16 and Consett Cricket Club on Saturday, April 30; or on (01207) 501755.
