DARLINGTON have turned to Cardiff City's Andy Campbell in a bid to solve their striker crisis.
With Clyde Wijnhard and Alun Armstrong suspended for Saturday's visit of Boston United, Quakers' boss David Hodgson is without his first-choice front-men.
After missing out on released Newcastle United striker Lewis Guy and Bradford City's Michael Symes last week, Northern Echo SPORT understands Hodgson has switched his attentions to Middlesbrough-born Campbell.
The 25-year-old, who joined Cardiff from Middlesbrough in a £950,000 deal three years ago, returned to Ninian Park last week after a month-long loan at Doncaster Rovers. Campbell was sent back to the Bluebirds just 24 hours after Rovers signed Guy on a two-week trial last Friday.
While Campbell would relish a return to the North-East with Quakers, the forward's wage demands may determine the outcome of any deal. However, Hodgson remains hopeful of reaching a financial compromise with counterpart Lennie Lawrence.
As it stands, defender Matt Clarke, Craig Russell and Mark Convery are Hodgson's only attacking options this weekend. Neil Wainwright serves a one-match ban, while Ian Clark, who has been sidelined since December with a double hernia, is out for ten days after suffering an ankle injury in the reserves' 2-1 win over Grimsby Town at the Williamson Motors Stadium.
Clark hurt his ankle when he blazed a 38th-minute penalty over the bar after Adolfo Gregorio was brought down in the box by Grimsby keeper Dave Clark.
Gavin Parkin had given Neil Maddison's side a 34th-minute lead before David Soames levelled five minutes before half-time. But, after teenager Richard Logan was brought down in the area, Joe Kendrick calmly despatched the resultant spot-kick in the 69th minute.
Recent signings Jonjo Dickman and Keith Gilroy both played, although it was Jason St Juste who caught the eye with a confident display on the left of midfield.
Darlington: Price, Valentine, Fleming, Mason, Kendrick, Gilroy, Gregorio (McLeod 74mins), Dickman, St Juste, Clark, Parkin (Logan 38mins) Subs (not used): Hughes, Janes, Pattinson.
