PENSIONERS will shake a leg as part of a major push to keep the older population fit.
Middlesbrough Council has organised a Dance Extravaganza for the over-60s on Thursday.
Organiser Joanne Turnbull said: "Middlesbrough Sport and Leisure Service runs more than 20 Active for Life courses across the town for older people where they can enjoy exercise in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.
"Dance is one of the most popular choices on these courses and this, and the success of Strictly Come Dancing on the TV, gave us the idea.''
Retired people and pensioners will be offered free instruction in line and ballroom dancing, followed by a buffet tea, karaoke and sing-song.
Councillor Brenda Thompson, the town's Older Persons Champion, said: "This is a great chance for older people to really show off their skills, or learn some new ones, and a good excuse to get dressed up and get out of the house.
The Dance Extravaganza is being held - free of charge - at Middlesbrough Town Hall on Thursday.
