A TABLE tennis team of nine-year-olds has thrashed 16 schools to become champions.

The 12 youngsters in teams A and B at St Joseph's RCVA Primary School, in Coundon, competed in the Bishop Auckland table tennis primary school's tournament on Thursday and knocked their opponents down the scoreboard.

With 108 points, team B won the table tennis shield and were overall winners after three-and-a-half hours and five games each for all players.

Headteacher Stefa McManners said: "We are very pleased with the result, but what is more pleasing is that the children enjoyed it.

"The fact that they do their best and they enjoy it is better than winning, although it nice that they have."

The 12 nine-year-olds competed against other year three and four students and say they had a brilliant time.

The school also had two individual triumphs.

Dalia Michalowski, nine, was overall winner of the girls tournament and Ryan Goldsborough, also nine, came second in the boys tournament.
