A CAR hit a 16-year-old girl and left her seriously injured in the road.

The girl was in hospital yesterday in a comfortable condition after being knocked over by a red car on the A177 road to Durham in north Stockton.

She sustained a broken leg, a deep cut on her right ankle, a suspected broken nose, two black eyes and grazes.

She was taken to the University Hospital of North Tees in Stockton.

The accident happened at about 7.20pm on Tuesday.

The driver stopped briefly but, seeing her lying in the road, drove away.

The car may have been a Ford Mondeo and it is possible there was damage to the driver's side of the car towards the front.

Police are appealing for the driver, witnesses and anyone with information to come forward.

PC Brian Kelly, of Stockton police, can be contacted on (01642) 302226.
