YOUNGSTERS at a primary school have been spreading their wings to share the cultures of other countries.

Every pupil from the nursery to junior class at Ox Close Primary School, in Spennymoor, has taken part in an international week.

Each class learned about the history, geography and customs of Italy, Austria, Japan, Spain, France, Greece, China or India.

They also dressed up in the colours and national costumes of their elected countries, sampled native dishes and greeted visitors in the countries' languages.

Deputy headteacher Michelle Forbes said: "We try to make pupils aware that they are part of a global community and appreciate other cultures.

"We collect a small school fund each term to enhance the curriculum with the arts.

"This year, we have had a Philippine dance troupe and African drumming to reflect the international theme.

"Dressing up, eating new foods and learning a bit of the language from their country keeps them interested and enjoying their projects."

To dress up, each child made a donation to Comic Relief, raising £178 from the school towards the national cash crusade.
