A rogues' gallery of professionals lined up for wet sponge in the face - to swell Red Nose Day funds.

Accountants and business advisors Sanders Swinbank, of Victoria Road, Darlington, set up solicitors, car salesmen, call centre operators, dentists and bank managers to face the music over the road in Sainsbury's car park.

A spokesman for the firm said: "It proved a popular move. Sainsbury's announced the unmissable chance to customers. We raised £300 and got very wet."

The event was one of many across the area.

Hummersknott School and Language College enjoyed a fun day of activities, with teachers taking on the cooks' roles and dishing up lunch to pupils.

Youngsters at Heathfield Primary School were treated to a show by the Magic Carpet Theatre Company.
