THE sights, sounds and tastes of Africa have come to a County Durham school this week.

Heighington Primary School held an African arts week, where pupils in the school learned about different aspects of African culture.

The school were visited by three members of Art Isiziba, which is based in Newcastle and whose members come from Zimbabwe and Sierra Leone.

They taught the children African drumming, dancing, mask-making and also made African food which they could sample.

The school's art coordinator, Janice Wise, said: "The children have loved it and we have as well.

"We have a different arts week each year.

"We're also having a visit from Traidcraft and it's also been Comic Relief, so we've tied it in with that as well.

"All the children have taken part and it's been lovely as it's given those who are not as academic a chance to shine."
