A NEW project will make it easier for residents to seek advice from a national housing charity.

Durham online initiative, which is funded by the Legal Services Commission, uses information communication technology to help people to access a range of legal advice services.

The charity Shelter has joined forces with the project to enable people to go on to a website and send their queries directly to Shelter's North-East housing aid office, in Newcastle.

As well as the website, people will be able get full consultation using a videophone link at local district council offices instead of travelling to Newcastle.

Bob Finch, from Shelter, said: "This new service means we can better reach people seeking advice for themselves or on behalf of others."

Durham Online aims to help people receive legal advice and guidance about issues such as consumer rights, benefits and housing, using its website and videolinks.

Anyone needing advice from Shelter can call 0191-232 3778 or send a query to www.durham-online.org.uk
