THE family of a pensioner who died while crossing a notorious stretch of road have called for action to prevent further tragedies.

Ronald Walker, 70, of Rostrevor Avenue, Stockton, was knocked over as he made his way home from Roseworth Community Social Club on Tuesday night.

The accident happened as Mr Walker tried to cross Junction Road, near to club, at around 8.45pm.

The pensioner, who was a regular visitor at the social club, was taken to James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, where he later died of his injuries.

Last night, Mr Walker's niece, Carol Slack, said the road was a notorious accident blackspot and called for steps to be taken to make it safe.

She said: "Obviously, the family are devastated by what has happened, but ours is one more in a long list of tragedies on that road. It is about time something was done to make that stretch of road safe.

"We know this was a tragic accident, but this is about the sixth one I can remember on that stretch of road."

Ms Slack paid tribute to her uncle, who she said was a kind and friendly man.

Mr Walker lived alone with his dog and was well-known in the area. His daughter, who no longer lives in the region, returned to the North-East after she was informed of his death.

Cleveland Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which involved a red Ford Escort.

The vehicle was travelling east towards Norton when the collision took place.

The driver stopped following the accident and was interviewed by police.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call PC Mark Cubitt on (01642) 301558.
