A COUNCIL is taking to the road to ask people how it should spend £78m earmarked for travel and transport improvements.

Durham County Council will hold eight public sessions on draft proposals for improvements across the county over the next six years.

The council, which has spent £110m on travel and transport since 2001, is drawing up its second Local Transport Plan.

Key areas will include improving access to facilities for people without a car, making it easier for disabled people to use public transport, making bus services more reliable and improving the condition of some bus stations.

The consultation sessions will be held between 6pm and 8pm at: Shotton Hall, Peterlee, Tuesday, April 5; Consett Civic Hall, Wednesday, April 6; Whitham Hall, Barnard Castle, Tuesday, April 12; Newton Aycliffe Youth Centre, Wednesday, April 13; Gala Theatre, Durham City, Tuesday, April 19; Civic Centre, Crook, Wednesday, April 20; Civic Centre, Chester-le-Street, Tuesday, April 26; Lamplight Arts Centre, Stanley, Wednesday, April 27.

Councillor Bob Pendlebury, cabinet member for the environment, transport and sustainability, urged people to give their views.
