FROM this newspaper 150 years ago - The discovery of iron-stone in Cleveland has given rise to a vast amount of enterprise, which is not confined to the immediate district. The immense mines of hidden wealth which have so suddenly been brought to light have called forth the active spirit not only of Middlesbro' but also of Darlington, and in addition to the numerous blast furnaces which have been erected in North Yorkshire - at Middlesbro' and Eston - Thursday saw the commencement of similar works in South Durham.

From this newspaper 100 years ago. - Lord Ronaldshay has shown his personal interest in the friendly society movement by associating himself with the Order of Druids, his lordship being on Monday night initiated as an honorary member of the Cliffe Lodge, Cotherston. It was a "red letter day" for members of that young lodge, which was formed less than a year ago. After the initiation ceremony the lodge was thrown open, Lord Ronaldshay presiding. A toast list was interspersed with harmony.

From this newspaper 50 years ago. - Northallerton will have its first ice show when Cinderella on Ice is presented at the Lyric cinema. The production comes direct from London, and the cast includes Vic Templar, well known comedian, as Buttons and who, in addition, will perform his comedy cycle act. The title role will be played by Joan Waterhouse, ice skating British Champion, and Jean Craven, skating star and actress, will be Prince Charming.

From this newspaper 25 years ago. - Sixteen year old Caroline Newnham, of Brentwood, Leyburn, was presented with her Queen's Guide award during a coffee evening held by the 1st Lower Wensleydale Girl Guide Company in the Leyburn Scout Hall on Wednesday last week.
