CASH is rolling in to help to rebuild a school playground that was destroyed by vandals.

A fortress-style playing area at Sugar Hill Primary School, in Newton Aycliffe, was wrecked by vandals last year.

The school's headteacher Frank Ridley said it would cost about £8,000 to build a new play area for the children, but that fundraising was well under way.

The school's cash crusade has been boosted by staff at Hays Travel in the town, who raised £614 for the appeal at a quiz night held at Woodham Golf Club.

Mr Ridley said: "We're all really grateful for the support that Hays Travel have shown us, I'm sure the money raised will give the kids miles of pleasure."

Linda Smithson, store manager, said: "It was such a shame when Sugar Hill Primary School's play area was destroyed by vandals.

"I'm really pleased that Hays Travel has been able to raise so much money to help rebuild somewhere for the kids to play."
