A RADIO presenter has been named best newcomer at this year's national Hospital Radio awards.

Mark Bexley, who joined Harrogate Hospital Radio last June, collected the award at a ceremony in Belfast.

Host Paul Robinson, a former head of Disney Television, said Mr Bexley had great wit, spontaneity and charm, and tipped him for a successful career in broadcasting.

Mr Bexley said: "It was nerve-wracking, and I can't believe I've won. According to the host, I'm a real find who should be on Radio 2 next year. I want that in writing from him.

"It hasn't sunk in yet."

Harrogate Hospital Radio chairman Bill Caw said: "This is fantastic news for Mark and for Harrogate Hospital Radio.

"Since joining us in June, Mark has made a real impact. He's a fantastic presenter, a very hard worker and is always coming up with new ideas to take the society forward.

"I know he has his sights on a career in broadcasting and this award will surely help him achieve his goal."

Harrogate Hospital Radio was shortlisted in the station of the year category, but narrowly missed out on the title.
