Craig Hignett intends to end his playing days at Darlington, although the much-travelled midfielder is uncertain when that will be.

The 35-year-old last night revealed his intentions to see out the remainder of his career at the Williamson Motors Stadium but admitted he was still unsure whether or not that will be beyond his current deal, which expires at the end of the season.

Much will depend on the plans of manager David Hodgson, who has already stated several players will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

Hodgson is disappointed that a player of Hignett's calibre has been restricted to just 19 appearances, through injury and illness, since joining Quakers on a free transfer in September.

Hignett, who has scored nine goals in that time, is currently recovering from a hernia operation and is unlikely to play again until May.

"If I decide to carry on playing then it would be with Darlington, if I was given the choice," said Hignett.

"At the moment I don't know whether or not to call it a day, but obviously a lot will depend on what the manager wants to do."

Reports have suggested that Hignett may hang up his boots to pursue a career in the media, having already worked for TV and radio this season. However, the Liverpool-born player is warming to the idea of putting his coaching badges to good use.

"I've been doing the odd bit of media work but I'd really like to go into management," said Hignett.

"I have the required coaching badges to be a manager and it's just a case of somebody giving me a chance."

Providing Quakers secure their place in the play-offs, Hignett has not given up hope of playing again this season.

He added: "I'm walking around OK after the operation and hopefully I'll be ready for the play-offs if we make it."

Former Darlington striker Martin Carruthers was on target twice as Quakers reserves were beaten 3-1 by Lincoln City at Durham City's Archibalds Stadium yesterday. Ollie Ryan hit the Imps' other goal, with Gavin Parkin scoring for Quakers.

Trialist Usman Gondal, released by Leicester City, impressed in midfield for Neil Maddison's men.

Darlington: Price, Pattinson, Mason, Maddison, Close, Gregorio, Gondal, Clark, Parkin, Logan, Gilroy Subs: Hughes, McLeod, Poole, Casson.
