CAMPAIGNERS from across Teesside are taking part in the Global Week of Action for Trade Justice by holding a candle-lit vigil and card-signing event.

The mass and vigil take place at St Francis' church, in Acklam, from 7pm tomorrow.

The following day, the card-signing event takes place outside All Saints' Church, near the Cleveland Centre, in Middlesbrough.

Middlesbrough CAFOD (Catholic Agency For Overseas Development) campaigner Gerard Russell is encouraging everyone to sign the cards voting for Trade Justice.

He said: "It is going to be an amazing event. I urge anyone who cares about those living in poverty across the world to come and join us and help to put pressure on UK politicians to make them aware that many people have had enough of the way global trade is run to benefit rich countries and hurt poor ones."

During Saturday's card-signing event, members of St Mary's Sixth Form College Jazz Band will be on hand to provide entertainment from 10.30am.

Mr Russell said: "With Britain hosting the G8 summit at Gleneagles in July, it's a real opportunity to make governments sit up and take notice.

"It will be a crucial time to draw attention to the scandal of unfair trade that keeps millions of people in poverty in developing countries."
