A CHARITY is concerned about the severe stress farmers are under through problems surrounding the new Single Payment Scheme.

Farm Crisis Network (Yorkshire) says: "Some are so disillusioned they have not even attempted to tackle their SPS application forms, despite the May 16 deadline looming. In addition, the Rural Payments Agency call centre set up to answer farmers' queries has been totally overwhelmed."

The charity, which supports farming families through difficult times, urged all farmers to open and complete the forms to the best of their ability by the deadline.

NFU, CLA or TFA members could ask those bodies for advice while others could seek help from other sources.

Howard Petch, chairman of Yorkshire FCN, said the network could not give professional advice, but added: "We are here to support people and guide them to sources of help and advice where appropriate. If you are a farmer at your wit's end, with nowhere to go for help, you are not alone.

"Please don't be afraid to contact us; we do understand and we want to help."

FCN's helpline number is 07002 326 326. Calls, which are confidential may be made from 7am-11pm, every day of the year. If appropriate, a visit from an FCN volunteer is offered.
