AN iconic moment from Middlesbrough FC's history has been recreated to mark the tenth anniversary of the final game at Ayresome Park.

Former Boro striker John Hendrie returned to the exact spot from where, in April 1995, he scored the last goal at Ayresome Park, helping the team secure promotion, before the club moved to the Riverside. A housing estate has since been built where the ground once stood. The site of the Holgate End goalposts is marked by a yellow spot and a metal sculpture of a folded jacket.

Yesterday, Mr Hendrie hit the winning goal again. He said: "It is good to be back - I remember the goal like it was yesterday. At the time, I did not realise the impact of the goal, but as time has gone by, it's importance has grown. It was a massive game for us, it was the last home game and there was a lot of hype beforehand, with an ex-players parade before kick-off and a band playing."

The Scot scored his first goal in three months as Boro beat Luton 2-1 and said farewell to Ayresome Park in style.

The proud owner of the historical spot on The Holgate could not be happier.

Life-long Boro fan Mark Cubitt said: "It is one of the things that drew me to the house, especially as it looks over the area on the terrace where I used to stand and the spot where John Hendrie scored the last ever goal is on my lawn - it doesn't get much better than that."

Co-author of Ayresome Park Memories John Wilson said: "There is plenty of street furniture to mark certain things about Ayresome Park, but not where the last goal was scored.

"We thought it would be a good idea to capture the magic moment again ten years later."
