THE ranks of North Yorkshire's part-time police officers are being bolstered next week with more of them going on the beat.

Sixteen new Special Constables, out of 50 currently training in the county, will be sworn in at a ceremony next week.

They will become an integral part of the force's recently-introduced neighbourhood policing teams, focusing on local priorities.

And they will use all available powers to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour to improve the quality of life in local communities

Chief Inspector Glyn Payne, of the community safety department, said: "We are committed to increasing the Special Constabulary establishment and will continue to drive recruitment in all areas of the force.

"Volunteering to become a Special Constable presents many opportunities, challenges and rewards, both personally and professionally.

"Being part of a neighbourhood policing team provides individuals with a chance to make a real difference.

"The teams are highly visible and accessible, engaging with communities to gather information, views and concerns, and work with partner agencies to find lasting solutions to local problems."

The ceremony will be held at the Hilton Hotel, in York, on Tuesday evening.
