YOUNG people at a town centre youth caf saw a police dog in action when he swept the building to show them how officers uncover drugs.

Beat officers PC Chris Metcalfe and Sergeant Kevin Vincent, and dog handler PC Alison Dawson, with her canine sidekick Jake, visited the eCaf in Ferryhill to give the demonstration.

Once the building was given the all-clear, officers played table tennis with the youngsters, before continuing with routine duties.

PC Metcalfe and eCaf co-ordinator Michelle Pickford, who runs the venue on behalf of Ferryhill Town Council to give children and teenagers a safe environment to meet friends, were delighted with the evening.

PC Metcalfe said: "This confirms what those of us who work closely with the eCaf have always known - it is a drug and alcohol-free facility, which is well managed, and in which parents can have confidence their children will be looked after."
