FOOTBALL fans are being told to stub out their cigarettes from next season.

Middlesbrough FC - long nicknamed the Smoggies by rival North-East fans - is to ban smoking in all areas of the Riverside Stadium.

Boro chief executive Keith Lamb said: "We do acknowledge that it won't be popular with some of our fans who enjoy a smoke, but we trust they will understand that, as a responsible organisation and employer, we must give priority to the health and comfort of our supporters and staff. This policy has strong support from the majority of our fans, as it will make the Riverside a far more pleasant and healthy place to visit.''

Middlesbrough is the latest club to stub out smoking. Chelsea made Stamford Bridge a no smoking zone last season, Ipswich has no smoking areas and Scottish side Dundee has also instituted a strict policy.

Peter Kelly, of Middlesbrough Primary Care Trust, said: "Passive smoking is a serious public health problem and the football club is setting an example to all employers.''

Supporters who would like information on giving up smoking can call Middlesbrough Stop Smoking Service on freephone 0800 952 4433.

Middlesbrough Mayor Ray Mallon backed Boro's decision. He said: "I wholeheartedly support and welcome Middlesbrough FC's stance. It gives out exactly the right message to home supporters and visitors."
