Breast is best for brainy babies

MOTHERS can transfer essential nutrients not always found in formula milks to their babies via their breast milk, according to a recent study from the University of Bristol Institute of Child Health. These include omega-3 fatty acids, which can help you have a brainy baby.

This latest study found that including high levels of oily fish in the diet of pregnant women can lead to babies born with the ability to develop higher communication skills, complementing earlier research which indicated that children of mothers who consumed extra omega-3 during breastfeeding scored more highly on an intellectual test than the children of mothers who didn't.

Other recent studies have also shown that when a mother increases her intake of omega-3s, the level of omega-3 in her breast milk also increases, whilst also benefiting the mother's health.

This week is National Breastfeeding Awareness Week.
