A VISIT to the dentist is not what youngsters would choose to do.

But pupils at the Laurel Avenue Primary School, on the Sherburn Road Estate, Durham, yesterday visited a local surgery to learn more about looking after their teeth.

They spent time at the Oasis Dental Practice in Maynards Row, Gilesgate, and had a good look round.

The visit was organised as part of National Smile Week, a campaign to encourage people to take care of their teeth and gums.

Health trusts are organising several events through the week and using the smile as the way of encouraging people of all ages to adopt good oral health practices.

The advice includes brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, less sugary foods and drinks, regular visits to the dentist and the use of chewing sugar-free gum.
