THE number of people seeking help in finding a home in Ryedale has risen 41 per cent to 341 in the past year, according to a district council report.

Housing services manager Richard Etherington blamed the increasing number of homeless people, and a lack of affordable homes.

Breakdown in relationships accounted for 21 per cent of the people seeking housing help, while a further 17 per cent had lost their private rented accommodation.

Domestic violence accounted for 7.6 per cent of inquiries, and problems in relationships with parents a further 9.4 per cent, the report stated.

About 32 per cent of people who sought help applied as homeless.

"Once clients have approached the council for advice, there are various actions open to us," said Mr Etherington.

He added: "These include giving information on housing benefit, accessing affordable housing, illegal eviction and harassment, and bond guarantees."

Ryedale District Council is to set out priorities in the Ryedale Housing Startegy, which will include:

* providing affordable housing for rent and low-cost home ownership in the district's market towns and villages;

* developing services for vulnerable people;

* strategic links with key partners such as Government agencies and other local authorities.

The report will go out for wider consultation once it has been approved by Ryedale's councillors.
