A TEAM of accountants raised more than £5,000 to fund research into a rare illness by tackling acoast-coast bicycle ride.

The accountants, from the Newcastle office of Ernst and Young, cycled 140 miles from Whitehaven, Cumbria, finishing on the east coast, in Sunder- land.

Their aim was to raise money to support research into Niemann-Pick disease, a rare genetic disease which damages the nervous system and can be fatal among children.

A seven-strong team from Ernst and Young took three days to complete the ride, taking in a number of hilly ascents of up to 10,000ft on their travels.

Managing partner of the Newcastle office Mark Hatton said: "This is a particularly cruel disease affecting babies and young children, which one of our team members has a very close personal experience of.

"Very little research is currently under way on Niemann-Pick and we hope that our efforts and other ongoing fundraising will make a valuable contribution to a better understanding and possible treatment for this disease."
