STAFF at a Teesdale school have been praised by education inspectors.

The Independent Schools Inspectorate spent five days at Barnard Castle Preparatory School in March.

Seventy-one lessons were observed, 30 members of staff interviewed and 80 parent questionnaires examined.

Inspectors looked at children's work, talked to the students and attended three assemblies, 12 registrations and seven extra curricula and sporting activities.

They also inspected the boarding house and medical centre, and the school was given a glowing report.

The findings highlighted:

* Good teaching and learning leading to good attainment and progress;

l Pupils of all abilities being offered a well balanced curriculum;

l Well motivated, attentive and thoughtful pupils;

l Good attendance with no unauthorised absences;

l Good provision for learning support;

l Good quality management and governance;

l Very good opportunities for the spiritual and moral development of pupils;

l Well qualified, experienced and highly committed staff;

l An enhanced learning environment thanks to refurbished classrooms;

l Good links with parents and the community;

l Good quality activities making a positive contribution to pupils' overall experience.

The inspectors said: "This is an effective school, which successfully achieves its aims.

"The strength of the school owes much to the exceptional vision, dedication and drive within the senior management team."

Inspectors said the library and computer technology could be improved.

Headmaster Ted Haslam said: "It is particularly pleasing that the inspectors have given special praise to areas of our school we value highly."
