VINTAGE vehicles took to the roads of the North-East yesterday to take part in the Beamish Rally.

More than 130 classic cars took part in the 35th safety and reliability run, in which all vehicles must be over 50 years old.

They set off from Chester-le-Street at 8.30am, stopping at ten checkpoints through County Durham and North Yorkshire.

Cars cover 155 miles throughout the course of the day before returning to Chester-le-Street.

Honorary secretary and opening marshal George Jolley said: "It was a really good day and we had the weather for it until the end when there was a bit of a deluge.

"A few people dropped out because of the heat but we got a good 115 to finish.

"The atmosphere was friendly and because it was so sunny everyone was in a good mood."

Mr Jolley will tally up points in all categories and announce the winner of the Beamish Enthusiasts Trophy this week.
