SIZZLING residents enjoying the summer heat are being urged by police to lock doors and windows.

Burglars are increasingly targeting open and unlocked doors and windows to enter people's homes.

In the first half of this month, the Middlesbrough district has seen a total of 64 residential burglaries.

Astonishingly, in 25 cases, the burglar entered the property via an open window or unlocked door.

Crime reduction officer Ged Kirkbright, of Cleveland Police, said: "As people have become more aware of their home security with window locks, lighting and alarms, burglars are looking for the easy option of an open entrance, like a door or window.

"It takes only seconds to enter an open back door and steal a handbag or wallet.

"With the warm weather here, people are tempted to leave doors and windows open all day.

"Our warning is don't - because you increase dramatically the chance of becoming a victim of burglary."

His advice is simple: "Always secure your home, whether you are in or out. Shut and lock all windows when you leave and remember to set your house alarm."
