ECB North East Regional Premier League: Champions South Northumberland gave a debut to Pakistani Waqas Chutghai on Saturday, but it was local lad Stephen Humble who destroyed Norton.

The pair opened the attack and it was Humble who set the scene for South North's victory when he quickly claimed the wickets of openers Nicky Beall and John Watson.

Although there was limited resistance from Sumit Puri and Kenny Gresham, Norton's innings collapsed to 128 all out in the face of penetrative bowling from Humble, who previously played for Swalwell and Blaydon. His final match-winning figures were five for 27.

Norton, who went into the game on the back of three successive victories, also had early successes at the crease with Jonathan Kean claiming the prize wickets of James Miller and Chris Hewison.

Opener Adam Heather (48) was joined by skipper John Graham who made 85 before being run out. Man-of-the-match Humble then contribued 42 and Chutghai an unbeaten 26 to 235 for six before the declaration was applied.

Whereas Norton came unstuck at the hands of a home-grown player, Stockton were defeated by the might of Pakistani Taufeeq Umar at Benwell Hill. He crashed 133 and with Simon Birtwisle adding 62 and Paul Cummins 46 not out, the Hill romped to a match-winning 283 losing just a couple of wickets.

Chris Oliver also scored a century in the game ending unbeaten on 118. Steve Gillespie added 62 and Peter Howells 37 and at the halfway stage Stockton must have fancied their chances of at least defending their total of 280 for five - but Umar ended their hopes.

Sunderland remain in pole position after recording their fourth successive win. Simon Old, Fred Napier and Lee Rushworth all reached the 40s leading Sunderland to 205 all out despite the efforts of Nicky Phillips with 4-40 and Ian Pattison who claimed three wickets for 59 runs.

Marlon Black quickly took the wickets of both Fell openers and despite a useful 37 from Callum Ferguson and 43 from Philip Taylor, the visitors were all out for just 157.

Black's pace earned him final figures of three for 45 but it was spinner Imran Shah (5-37) who caused most problems for the Gateshead Fell batsmen. With the exception of Stuart Walker, Philadelphia's batsmen offered little at Chester-le-Street.

The former Durham Academy player struck six boundaries in 51 as a total of only 110 was reached from 49 overs. Alex Brown conceded just 25 runs in 16 overs taking four wickets and spinner Quentin Hughes returned three for seven from four overs.

It was not all one way, however, and Phili fought back taking the first four Cestrian wickets with only 57 runs on the board. Their low total though gave them little chance and skipper Allan Worthy, who opened the innings, steered his side to a five-wickets victory ending unbeaten on 35. James Davidson captured three of the wickets for 59 runs.

Durham Academy drew their game at Blaydon who were in the ascendancy at stumps.

West Indian Neil McGarrell (92) and captain Mark Drake with 60 provided the bulk of the runs in the Blaydon total of 221 for six. The Academy never threatened and stuttered to 132 for seven at close of play.

Paul Craig was their top scorer with 30 while in the Blaydon attack, Gary Stewart and McGarrell each took three wickets.

Newcastle's last pair were at the wicket when time was called in their game with Tynemouth at Jesmond. Matthew Hynd (35) and Joel Hughes (58) saved their side as a total of 188 for nine was realised.

Six of the wickets fell to the impressive David Barrick for 75 runs. Steven Scott (90) and Iain Purdy (61) dominated the Tynemouth innings with a century-opening partnership which laid the foundations for a total of 231 for nine. Five of the wickets fell to Jason Bennett for 54 runs.
