A MAN was left seriously injured after he was stabbed in the back by a group of youths in what is thought to have been an unprovoked attack.

The 20-year-old suffered a deep spinal wound when he was stabbed between the shoulder blades after being chased through Darlington town centre by the gang.

The man - who has not been named but lives in the town - was found near Allied Carpets, in Russell Street, at about 11.30pm on Sunday.

He was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital, but later transferred to the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough.

Last night, his condition was described as poorly but stable.

One man was arrested yesterday and was being held for questioning, but police said inquiries were continuing.

The incident happened as the victim and two friends were enjoying a night out, finishing in Route 66, in King Street.

As the three left the bar, there was a confrontation with a large group of youths gathered outside - thought to be aged between 16 and 18 - several of whom were riding bicycles.

After an exchange between the groups, the victim became separated from his friends and was pursued by several youths.

At one point, he was rammed from behind by a youth riding a bike.

The man was chased through Commercial Street car park, through Northgate and into Russell Street, where the stabbing took place. It is believed three youths were involved in the attack.

The weapon, believed to be a knife or similar instrument, has not been recovered.

Detective Sergeant Jeff Pow, of Darlington CID, said: "Inquiries are continuing into further persons believed to be involved in the offence, and we would urge anyone with information to come forward."

Police are appealing for witnesses, or anyone with information, to contact them on 0845 606 0365, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
