surfers who pulled a man and his partner's six-year-old son from the sea may win bravery awards.

The surfers dragged the boy to safety, but 46-year-old Tony Christon, from Thirsk, could not be revived and died at the scene.

Mr Christon, his partner, Hannah Butler, and her son, Bryn, had been enjoying a day out at St Ouen's beach, on the island of Jersey.

It is thought that Bryn was knocked over by a wave as he paddled with Mr Christon, who then tried to reach him.

At the opening of the inquest into his death, PC Steven Webb said he was going to recommend at least two of the surfers involved in the rescue for Royal Humane Society awards.

Mr Christon's brother-in-law, Jerry Irving, who was representing the family at the hearing, praised the efforts of those who went to rescue.

He said: "We owe them the ultimate debt of gratitude."

At the inquest, it was confirmed that the likely cause of death was drowning.

A funeral is expected to be held this week, followed by a memorial service at St Mary's Church in Thirsk.

Three years ago Bryn's father, Richard Metcalfe, died aged 31, of a rare bone cancer.

Mr Christon spent more than ten years with Youth Clubs North Yorkshire, based at Carlton Lodge Outdoor Centre, near Thirsk. He moved to Jersey a year ago.
