THE number of children taking part in an engineering event has doubled.

A record number of 115 projects were entered into this year's Engineering Inspirations Education Showcase compared to last year.

The event, a challenge to pupils from across Yorkshire, took place at the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington, near York.

It aims to inspire young people to become engineers and designers.

Pupils competed for 25 awards, with each winner receiving a cash prize.

They also had the chance to make and launch paper rockets and take part in a solar boat challenge while they waited for the results of the judging.

The overall winner was Rose-Marie Almond, from Harrogate Granby High School, whose external remote control design for an electric wheelchair won the top award in the 15 to 16-year-old category and was judged to be the competition's best project.
