PUPILS from a Derwentside school have dedicated a musical production to their headteacher, who is retiring after 21 years at the helm.

John Cowley is leaving Greenland Junior School in South Moor, Stanley, next Friday, after more than two decades in charge.

Youngsters aged seven to 11 are taking part in When Children Rule The World at the Lamplight Arts Centre, in Stanley.

It is a collection of songs and dances from hit musicals such as Oliver, Annie, Cats, Chicago, Grease, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and Whistle Down The Wind.

Mr Cowley, 56, from Cockfield, near Bishop Auckland, said: "It is an honour that they have decided to dedicate the production to my career and services to the school.

"I am delighted and there has been great feedback from parents."

He started his career, in 1970, at a school near Leeds, before becoming deputy headteacher at Cockfield Primary School, later moving to Greenland Junior School.

Mr Cowley said: "I look back at the many, many changes that have taken place. I will miss working with children and serving the community.

"I have fond memories of nice children, supportive parents and wonderful teachers."

He plans to do a little supply work during his retirement and travel, mainly to the US to visit family.

The show runs until tonight. Tickets cost £3. The box office is on (01207) 218899.
