A COUNCIL'S street wardens are to step up night shifts and work from police stations.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council says the move is in response to public feedback.
The six supervisors and 24 wardens will split into two shifts, each with 15 personnel, working from 1pm to 12.05am for four days on a rolling shift pattern, covering 365 days a year, including Bank Holidays and weekends.
The move comes with a new look for the service, with wardens changing their uniform to black trousers, white shirt, bottle-green tie and jumper, with a hat, complete with bottle green band and the council's logo.
Their high-visibility tops will have epaulettes with an individual number for each warden.
Councillor Joyce Benbow, the council's cabinet member for community safety, said: "This is what this council has been waiting for.
"It's taken time and a detailed review, but we now have a streamlined, well-trained, modern service to be proud of.
"We are looking to extend the number of wardens within the next year so that their visibility and effectiveness is further increased."
Langbaurgh Police's district commander, Superintendent Ian Richards, said: "We are very supportive of this initiative, which is another link to providing reassurance to the public through a visible presence on the streets.
"It is another good example of the close co-operation between the police and the council."
