PRIMARY schoolchildren took a walk around their neighbourhood and came up with safety suggestions which are being put into a £250,000 package of improvements.

Pupils from Newport Primary School, Middlesbrough, took part in a community walkabout, organised by West Middlesbrough Neighbourhood Trust (WMNT), with other local residents to get them thinking and talking about issues and concerns in their neighbourhoods.

The walkabout focused on the St Paul's Road area of Newport, one of the busiest roads through the estate.

They came up with a host of ideas, ranging from more litter bins to extra seating in the neighbourhood for people to sit down and rest.

Other improvements will see more disabled access along pathways throughout Newport, using dropped kerbs, improved street lighting and street signs, the introduction of talking litter bins in Newport Primary School, extra railings outside the school, and rails and bollards to keep vehicles off green areas.

Other proposals are the development of traffic calming measures to improve safety.

Christine Quinn, headteacher of Newport Primary School, said: "We were delighted that the children took part in the walkabout. Initiatives like this give children the chance to play their part in the West Middlesbrough community as young citizens."
