THE chance to breathe fresh air is the main reason people visit the region's national parks, a survey has found.

The Association of National Park Authorities (Anpa) found that 63 per cent of visitors said fresh air was the main reason to visit the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors national parks.

The survey was to mark National Parks Week, from July 22 to 29. The poll showed the Yorkshire Dales was the fourth most popular park, after the Lake District, New Forest and Peak District.

The North York Moors National Park was seventh.

Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority chairman Carl Lis said: "The survey shows what everyone knows -that the Yorkshire Dales contain some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK and they are well worth visiting."

Anpa chief executive Martin Fitton said: "A day out in the countryside can do won-ders for your physical and emotional well-being."
