A PRIMARY school's sensory garden is one of the winners of a regional environmental award.

Pupils at St Patrick's school in Consett decided to improve the existing school gardens to make them more wildlife-friendly, including a sensory area for youngsters from the school's special needs unit to enjoy.

They weeded and cleared the site, cut back overgrown trees, and installed a pergola, bridge and wishing well, bird houses and wind chimes. They also laid steps and paths and planted more colourful and fragrant flowers, raising money for the project with an Easter egg competition and raffle.

The school was joint overall winner of Northumbrian Water's Making Waves competition, along with a group of 13-year-olds from Blyth, Northumberland.

St Patrick's also won the biggest impact project category with a prize of a trip to the Lake District.

More than 500 youngsters aged nine to 16 from the region entered the competition, which was co-ordinated by the Young People's Trust for the Environment.
