WORK starts this month on a £680,000 coastal protection scheme for Skinningrove.

The flood defence work starts on Monday, July 18 and is expected to be completed by September or October.

The work, which has been grant-aided by Defra, will involve widening the beck and opening up the channel under the third span of the Beach Road bridge.

A 26m-long rock spur will be built at the mouth of the beck to limit wave action travelling up it.

Coun Eric Empson, Redcar and Cleveland Council cabinet member for infrastructure, said: "This is another piece of essential work to protect the village from the elements, increasing the level of protection from coastal flooding to one-in-100-year storm events.

"We have involved residents in the planning process, with consultation meetings and exhibitions, and I'm sure they will be pleased to see this important work getting under way."

Contractors Volker Stevin have been told to obey a 10mph speed limit through the village to the A174 to minimise disturbance to residents.

The route for the disposal of the surplus excavated material and the delivery of tons of armour stones to the site will be via Cliff Terrace, The Square, Mill Lane and Skinningrove Road to the A174 at Mill Bank.
