NEASHAM Parish Council is taking steps to protect the village green from youths driving cars.

At Monday's meeting, chairman John Weighell reported that youths had been causing problems for residents over the past month by driving their cars over the village green while playing loud music.

"They drive over the green to get to the river but it was so bad one evening that the police came out with the dog van," he said.

"A barbecue was also thrown into the river.

"I have received a letter from a resident who has suggested we put a metal gate over the bridleway to prevent cars driving up to the river bank.

"There has been a significant increase in cars driving up there and it is churning up the grass and creating a serious road hazard to pedestrians and horse riders. A serious accident will occur."

The resident suggested that a lockable barrier could be installed and keys made available for farmers, emergency services, council staff and any other relevant body.

Members agreed that it would be illegal for the parish council to block the access because it was a right of way and needed to remain open for emergency service access.

Coun Weighell said: "It's 17 years since we had the signs painted or purchased new ones for the village green. I think we should at least have one new one."

Coun Derek Dodwell also suggested the possibility of introducing fines for driving over the village green area.

The council agreed to write to Darlington Borough Council's legal department for advice on the matter and wording for the potential new signs.
