A COUNCIL groundsman has been named part-time student of the year at an agricultural college.
Paul Findlay will be presented with his award this afternoon at Houghall College, Durham City, where he has completed his two-year HNC in arboriculture.
Mr Findlay, who works for Newcastle City Council, had wanted to do the course for several years and was supported in going back to college by his employers.
Dave Hay, the council's principal grounds maintenance manager, said: "We knew that Paul was a good worker when we agreed to support him on the course, he'd proved as much during his 23 years working for the council.
"Even so, it is never straightforward going back to studying, which makes his being named part-time student of the year even more of an achievement."
