A MOBILE footcare service treating patients around south Durham has been suspended because of mechanical problems.

No decision has been taken on the long-term future of the service, which operates in the Sedgefield, Wear Valley and Teesdale areas.

Durham Dales and Sedgefield Primary Care Trusts suspended the service after a manufacturer's inspection of the trailer uncovered mechanical and electrical faults.

Patients with appointments have been offered alternative dates at the venue of their choice.

Jeff Hobkirk, head of the podiatry service, said: "We regret that we have to suspend this long-running service, but it was felt necessary in order to protect the safety of both staff and the public.

"Durham Dales and Sedgefield trusts are looking into the options for the future of the mobile service.

"The podiatry service apologises to all users of the mobile service for the sudden change to service and any inconvenience it may cause."

Weardale councillor John Shuttleworth urged the trusts to get the trailer back on the road as soon as possible.

He said: "A lot of the people who use this service are elderly and live in remote communities. It has been an integral part of rural life for years.

"There is no way it should be withdrawn. If the trailer is broken, they should fix it."
