CAMPAIGNERS fighting against the relocation of a successful village school last night pledged to keep the issue in the public eye over the coming weeks.

An action group has been set up in Hurworth, where parents want to preserve the secondary school.

Darlington Borough Council announced controversial proposals for the closure of Hurworth School and Eastbourne Comprehensive and the creation of one school.

The two schools would be brought together on a single site in Yarm Road, Darlington.

The proposal has sparked anger in Hurworth. Protestors want to retain the school in the village.

A sub-committee of the school's governing body, which will eventually make a decision on whether to back the council's plan, is due to meet on Monday.

Action group spokesman Ian Holme said members would continue to campaign against the plan.

He said: "There is going to be a combination of high-impact things, where people will be involved in large-scale actions, and in the background we have people coming up with detailed information."
