TWO gardens will open to the public on Sunday to raise money for charity.

The gardens, at numbers 12 and 13 Durham Road, Middle Herrington, are owned by father and daughter Richard Heron and Susan Winfield.

Both boast fine displays of roses and extensive ranges of mature herbaceous borders.

In addition, one has an Elizabethan knot garden with numerous specimen trees, including eucalyptus and drimys.

Mr Heron, who at 91, has decades of gardening experience, also specialises in cultivating an extensive greenhouse collection of fuchsia, pelargonium, streptocarpus and a vine.

He said: "I have 123 varieties of fuchsia and now propagate many hundreds of cuttings, including regal pelargonium and streptocarpus.''

The gardens have opened for a number of years as part of the National Gardens Scheme.

Money raised at the event will go to a range of charities including Macmillan Cancer Relief.

Both gardens will be open between 2pm and 5.30pm.
