THE family of a teenager who died in mysterious circumstances following a nightclub incident have spoken of their turmoil after police cleared the two main suspects.

Nathan Allen was found unconscious at the bottom of the steps outside Inside Out in Darlington after a Hallowe’en party last year.

Seven days later, the 19- year-old’s family took the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support machine after he spent the week in intensive care without regaining consciousness.

Two doormen were arrested after the incident and bailed while police continued their inquiries.

But now, police have announced that the men, who have not been named, will not be charged.

Nathan’s foster mother and natural mother have both spoken of their frustration over the decision.

“It feels like we are in limbo now and all the time we are in mourning for the death of a 19-year-old boy who did not deserve to die the way he did,”

said Nathan’s mother Jayne Petre, who lives in Carlisle.

“The police have got no other suspects. We’re not happy about it, but what can we do?”

Nathan was raised by his foster mother Barbara Howard from the age of five, and grew up on the Skerne Park estate, in Darlington.

The popular teenager was known by the nickname Eggy.

Nearly 1,500 friends and family have joined a group in his memory on the social networking website Facebook.

“Everybody knew him as a happy-go-lucky lad,” said 61- year-old Mrs Howard.

“I think it is terrible that no one will face a trial for this and I have told the police as much. They told me they weren’t going to charge anyone because it wouldn’t get to court.

“If I had been told it was an accident and he had slipped down the stairs, it would have been different. But I still have no idea what happened.”

It is believed that Nathan was evicted from the club in Beaumont Street in the early hours of November 1 after becoming involved in an altercation with another reveller, a man wearing a fancy dress costume as The Riddler, from the Batman films.

What happened next is unclear, but Nathan suffered serious head injuries in a fall down a flight of steps outside the club.

He died on November 7 at The James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough.

A spokeswoman for Darlington police said: “The Crown Prosecution Service has decided to take no further action against the two men arrested in connection with the death of Nathan Allen.

“Mr Allen’s family has been informed of the decision and the reasons for it.

“The matter has now been referred to the coroner.”
