POLICE are appealing for witnsesses to an assault which left a man unconscious and a community in shock.

The attack took place on Monday, January 25 between 10 and 11pm in Elmhurst Gardens, Hemlington, Middlesbrough.

A man in his early 20s was attacked by a group of six males after he challenged them about stealing a wheelie bin.

The attackers are described as being in their late teens, wearing tracksuits with hooded tops and scarves covering their faces.

They punched and kicked the victim to the ground and one of them struck him with a metal bar while he was on the floor.

The victim was knocked unconscious and required hospital treatment for serious head injuries.

A spokesman for Cleveland Police said: "This appears to be an unprovoked and extremely violent attack on a member of the public which has horrified and shocked the local community."
