LOCAL food producers and artists are invited to set out their stalls at a new event.

An award-winning group of traders has signed up to take part in Stockton farmers’ market, which launches on Saturday, March 27, between 9am and 2pm, in Wellington Square.

Foodfirst, a social enterprise run by nearly 20 East Cleveland and North Yorkshirebased retailers and producers, already runs Saltburn farmers’ markets, which regularly attract up to 2,000 visitors.

The group is hoping to recreate a similar buzz in Stockton, to complement the existing outdoor market in Stockton High Street.

There are already 14 stalls taking part, selling organic vegetables, buffalo meat, game and chocolate cakes.

Lorna Jackson, from Foodfirst, said: “We’ll also have Real Meals and their huge paella pan cooking up a seafood treat, and maybe a few curries to take home too.

“We’d love to hear from any locally-based producers who’d like to join in.

“Our markets in Saltburn also have local artists selling their works – pottery, sculptures, photography, you name it – so we’d love to hear from any Stockton-based artists who’d like to grab themselves a showcase.

“No previous market experience is necessary, as we can provide stalls, advice and support.

“So, any budding cook, school enterprise or allotment groups would be very welcome to get in touch.”

Rob Gildersleeve, centre manager at Wellington Square, said: “The specialist markets we’ve had here before have always been very popular, and we’re really looking forward to the farmers’ markets lined up for the rest of the year.”

Further markets are scheduled for Saturday, May 29, July 31 and October 30.

Councillor Bob Cook, Stockton Borough Council’s Cabinet member for transport and regeneration, said he was delighted the award-winning market “would complement and enhance the retail offer through our own market and shopping centres”.

He added: “The stalls will provide a whole range of goods so whether a curry tickles your taste buds or confectionery will be the icing on the cake, there will be something for everyone.”
