OLYMPIC boxer Tony Jeffries has thrown his weight behind a wristband campaign for injured troops and their families.

The boxer presented a signed glove to a group of women who have organised a fundraising event for 3 Rifles Swift and Bold wristband appeal.

The appeal – backed by The Northern Echo – is raising money for 3 Rifles serving in Afghanistan.

Event organisers Anne Gamblin, Claire Gillis and Stephanie Todd, from Sunderland City Council’s adult services, were on hand to received the glove from Mr Jeffries, at the Olympian Boxing Gym, in Ryhope.

Mr Jeffries said: “It is a fantastic cause and I am delighted to support them.

“People say that sports people are stars, but these soldiers are the true heroes – going out there to Afghanistan and doing what they are doing.

“When I go into the ring I train and know what to expect. But it takes something special to go out there and do what they are doing.

“If there is any way I can help raise money for these people, I will do it.”

Mrs Gamblin said: “My husband, Captain Martin Gamblin, has been in the Army for 27 years.

“We spoke about it often in the office, and thought it would be a good thing to raise money for the lads who put their lives on the line. We just wanted to show how much we appreciate it.” The true cost of the conflict is only too real for Ms Todd She grew up with Sapper David Watson – killed by a roadside bomb on New Year’s Eve in Afghanistan – and said he was “like a brother” to her.

Spr Watson, of 33 Engineer Regiment, Royal Engineers, was attached to 3 Rifles.

Ms Todd said: “The lads coming back need our support.”

Other members of the event organising team are Dawn Lamming, Lynsey Boag and Joanne Monarch.

The event, which includes live music and a disco, will be held at the Ashbrook Rugby and Cricket Club, in Sunderland, from 7pm to 11pm, on Tuesday, March 23.

As well as Mr Jeffries’ boxing glove, there will a prize draw for a signed Sunderland AFC and Falcons shirts.
