Drug user warns of the dangers of mephedrone

A DRUG user who ended up on suicide watch in a psychiatric hospital after bingeing on new “legal high” drug mephedrone last night called for the substance to be banned.

The 28-year-old, from Teesdale, County Durham, spoke out to warn other users about the dangers of mephedrone, also known as drone, bubble or meow. The man, who wants to remain anonymous, believes mephedrone is even more addictive than cocaine, which he has also taken.

It can cause blackouts, severe hallucinations and mental health problems.

He spent a week at West Park psychiatric hospital, in Darlington, after taking the substance, when his behaviour led to him being picked up by the police.

With prices in the North- East falling from £25 a gram down to £15 or even £10 a gram, he said mephedrone should be outlawed as soon as possible before there are more tragedies.

Last November, five people in Teesdale were hospitalised after taking the drug.

The 28-year-old said: “It made me feel paranoid, anxious and suicidal. If you take enough, it will drive you mad.”

Government experts are studying mephedrone to see if it should be added to the list of banned drugs.

Durham Police have reports of mephedrone being mixed with illegal drugs, including amphetamine and cocaine.

Officers have said the drug is being used in Teesdale, Bishop Auckland, Newton Aycliffe and Darlington.

The 28-year-old, who is now undergoing rehabilitation, believes he was probably one of the first people in the UK to order mephedrone over the internet in August 2008.

It cost £100, arrived by post and consisted of white powder in capsules. He rapidly became addicted.

“I was sniffing loads of the stuff. I tried to cut back, but I wanted it so much. If I could not get it, I would get really, really anxious.”

PC Dave Williamson, who is based at Barnard Castle police station, warned that anyone found in possession of a suspected controlled drug could be arrested, searched and detained in a police cell until it could be established whether the sample contained illegal drugs.

But he admitted that if the sample turns out to be mephedrone, the police have no powers to prosecute.

Dunno about that, I reckon you have to be mentally defective anyway if you use drugs, certainly most druggies are from the shallow end of the gene pool.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion Super steve, but I beg to differ I know this person and they are extremely intelligent, you clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

Typical druggie, everyones fault but their own. What about the misery they cause innocent people by being theiving toerags to fund their habits, they dont care about victims of crime so why should we be bothered about them. No sympathy for any of them low lifes, you reap what you sow.

Sorry viv-
not extremely intelligent at all.
Although probably is by Cockfield standards.
Buying a substance of questionable origin on the internet and then binge on it.
Get real - an act of EXTREME STUPIDITY.
Having worked with drug abusers for many years I do know what I'm talking about.

What the hell do you mean 'by Cockfield standards'? I know Viv and the person involved in this case and she is right. If you have worked with drug abusers as you say, you will know they come from all backgrounds and addiction is not confined to people with low intelligence. Indeed, how many so called 'stars', self made millionaires and for that matter, university students end up in rehab?
I wonder how many of those drug abusers you helped cj-dog? Not many is my guess.

Why are people defending druggies! Have you ever been a victim of one! They are parasites who make others lives hell. From my experience they deserve no help as they are incureable, once a druggie always a druggie. A plague on society that need strong measures to deal with.

Well Nigel and viv-
drug abuse appears to be the norm and acceptable in Cockfield.
Oh, and Nigel, I have worked with drug abusers for a long time and have learned that they are manipulative, dishonest and stupid and will do anything to feed their habit, including stealing from their own family and indiscriminate crime against strangers, and trying any old sh*t they can lay their hands on.
After receiving treatment the majority return to their addiction and blame everyone else rather than accept personal responsibility.
Ergo- EXTREMELY STUPID.
While giving the approved treatment is one thing - you cannot help those who refuse to accept responsibility for their actions.
Perhaps your interest in this is emotional (or a lucrative business interest). Mine is legitimately professional.

Well cj-dog, I repeat everyone is entitled to their opinion and if as you say you have worked with drug abusers for many years,I hope you are not still doing so because you are obviously in the wrong job. Yes a lot of what you say is correct but it is the drug addiction that makes the abuser behave in the manner they do that is not their natural personality. Sorry, you may have worked with drug abusers but trust me I probably know a whole lot more about it than you do.
Cockfield is a super village, yes it has it's problems but so does most other towns and villages in this area and with the same problem. I know that there is nothing done to help these people or their families because of stinking rotten attitudes like yours. Why not come to Cockfield and meet those concerned in this nightmare instead of spouting the rubbish you are spouting here.

How dare you suggest anyone has a business or lucrative interest, that is completely untrue. I tell you what with professionals like you around there really is no hope.

viv - you are 23 years old and are of a generation that sees drug abuse as acceptable therefore you defend it vigorously without question.
Do you still hang about down the Queens?
Cockfield used to be on my patch so I know it well and many of its pond life- hence my comments.
And you are wrong- IT IS the personality type and not the drug that makes an addict.
Weak-minded = weak-willed = weak moral values.

Ted Bundy was extremely intelligent.
.
Didn't get - or deserve - much sympathy though.

There HAS been quite a bit of press about the effects of drugs, so its hard to sympathise when people get into them and get stuck there.
Like stupid smokers and alcoholics!!!! loll!!!
cj-dogs attitude makes it hard to believe anything they type really - is that how professionals think about their clients???? Or is it just how some people argue on a website??!!!! lolll!!!!
