AN URGENT call is being made for more foster carers to come forward following an increase in the number of children who need to be looked after.

Over the last year, the number of youngsters in County Durham needing foster care has risen by 14 per cent and there is a shortage of adults prepared to take them on.

Durham County Council says it wants to hear from anyone interested in finding out more about fostering.

Florence Coulter, the authority’s foster team manager, said: "Our foster carers come from all walks of life. Some have already worked with children but want a new challenge while others are looking for a career change and also a life change.

"Not everyone can become a foster carer but we think there are lots of people out there who could be fantastic carers but may not have the confidence to apply. These are the people we want to encourage to get in touch with us."

She added: "It doesn’t matter whether you are young or old, working or unemployed, married, single or in a same-sex relationship.

"What’s more important are the personal qualities you can bring. We’re looking for people who have a real interest in children and young people, people who are patient, understanding and have their feet firmly on the ground."
