AN appeal has been launched to reunite two war medals with the family of the soldier awarded them after the First World War.

The two campaign medals were presented to Private J Mason, of the Durham Light Infantry.

The silver and gold medals are embossed with his army number, 96178.

Frank Brannigan, chairman of the DLI Spennymoor branch, has been asked by RAF veteran Chris Bessford for help to trace Pte Mason's family.

Mr Bessford, from Spennymoor, was handed the medals several years ago and believes Pte Mason came from the Spennymoor or Ferryhill area.

Mr Brannigan has contacted the rifles office and checked DLI records but attempts to track down any descendants have so far drawn a blank.

He said: "Mr Bessford and I are keen to find relatives who can prove they are Mr Mason's family.

"They may not know they are out there or could be the final bit missing from a family history."

Anyone who believes they are related to Pte J Mason can call Mr Brannigan on 01388-420758.
